Water Flossing Vs. Traditional Flossing

Nothing is more adorable than a charming, healthy, and natural smile. But, unfortunately, many people think that looking after one’s oral hygiene is only essential for having pearly white teeth. Good oral hygiene maintenance is necessary not just for one’s smile and looks but also to enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle.

Unfortunately, many people think that brushing twice a day is sufficient to prevent tooth decay and gum problems. However, the American Dental Association recommends brushing our teeth twice a day and flossing once every day to ensure optimal oral health. Therefore, both brushing and flossing are equally essential when it comes to oral health.

Now, you might wonder, “ why is flossing so important?” and “can I floss using the traditional floss, or are there other options available?” - good questions, indeed. In this article, Dr. Gonzalez at Tatum Point Dentistry explains the importance of flossing and helps us understand the difference between traditional and water flossing.

Why is Flossing Important?

When done correctly, a toothbrush can effectively remove the food debris from the visible tooth surfaces. However, the bristles of a toothbrush cannot penetrate entirely within the tight spaces between two teeth. If these interdental regions are not cleaned properly, it can lead to plaque deposition and cause various dental complications like tooth decay and gum disease. This is where flossing becomes essential, as it helps in removing interdental plaque deposits.

Traditional Vs. Water Floss: What is the Difference?

A few years ago, the only option available for flossing was the traditional string flosses. To use them, you should tie the string around their fingers and gently pass it through the interdental surfaces of all the teeth. However, today, water flossers are available. Water floss, also called Waterpik, is a device that generates a pressurized water stream that is directed between the teeth to remove interdental plaque and food debris.

Traditional Vs. Water Floss: Which is More Effective?

While water flossers help remove food debris from the tight interdental spaces, they are not as effective as traditional floss. This is because the floss provides a mechanical cleansing function for removing food debris that ensures better cleaning than a water flosser.

However, water flossers can be recommended for patients in the following cases:

  • Sensitive Gums - water flossers are less painful in these cases.
  • Dexterity Problems - a water flosser is recommended in patients who do not have sufficient manual dexterity to use traditional floss, e.g., physical or mental disabilities.
  • Braces - tooth braces often make flossing quite challenging. Your dentist may suggest a water flosser in addition to an interdental toothbrush to ensure optimal oral hygiene during your orthodontic treatment.

Flossing every day goes a long way in keeping you healthy and ensuring that you maintain a healthy, sparkling smile. But, on the other hand, ignoring regular flossing can lead to various complications like teeth cavities and periodontal issues, often requiring deep teeth cleaning (scaling and root planning). Besides, visiting your dentist regularly for checkups also helps prevent these problems. At Tatum Point Dentistry, we recommend our patients visit us at least twice a year for regular checkups and professional teeth cleaning (if necessary). So, book an appointment with us today and say goodbye to all your dental problems.
